Volcanoes national Park is an ultimate tourist destination in Rwanda covering an area of about 125 sq. Kilometers on a high altitude of 4500 meters above the sea level. Volcanoes national park also known as The Parc Des Volcans is found in the north western part of the country about a two hours’ drive from Kigali – the capital city of Rwanda. It comprises of the virunga ranges of Bisoke, Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Mikeno and Karisimbi mountains which are well known habitats for the most endangered species of wildlife – the mountain gorillas, a unique species of wildlife only found in the virunga range of Africa with the cold climate conditions and high altitudes. These reside within the evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath of the Volcanoes national park.
Trekking and hiking the steep slopes of volcanoes national park is quite an exciting activity which introduces tourists/ visitors to the wilderness of the volcanoes bamboo rain forest, listening to the sounds of sing birds and chattering golden monkeys, passing through the littered forest canopy with fresh spoor of the park’s dwellers the likes of elephants, buffalos, mountain gorillas among others. And during this virunga trek in Rwanda, tourists also get a glimpse of the highest peaks of the volcanoes while hidden within the national park forest canopy.
Volcanoes national park still offers wonderful scenic views to tourists at its foot especially in the local town of Ruhengeri. It is gifted with a natural bridge in Musanze province (which was formed as a result of volcancity causing the lava flow to cool from this area). Ruhengeri town is also blessed with the beautiful twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo as well as Karago.
Ruhengeri town is also well established with modern accommodation facilities that can be used by tourists when visiting the volcanoes national park such as the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge / Volcanoes Lodge ( Luxury), Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge / La Palme (Mid-range), Muhabura Hotel (Basic).
