Nyungwe tropical rainforest national park is one of the largest montane natural forests in East and central Africa located in the south eastern part of the country. The forest covers a wide area of about 1000 sq. kilometers and about 225 kilomeers from Kigali. It usually takes up to an entire day driving form Kigali – Rwanda’s capital to Nyungwe forest. This dense tropical montane forest is a bio diversified ecosystem with various primates’ species, wildlife and bird species. It’s best known for its mass concentration of chimpanzees. It’s an old aged forest with over 200 unique trees and shrub species and many other wildlife (flora and fauna) species dwellers. Nyungwe tropical rainforest national park is a moist and cool ecosystem at an altitude of 1700 to 2950 meters above the sea level.
Nyungwe forest is a famous tourist center in Rwanda and it offers several tourist activities like primate watching where interesting creatures like the (chimpanzees, L”Hoest’s monkeys and the Acrobatic Angola colobus) can be enjoyed, bird watching which introduces visitors to over 300 bird species with 26 of these endemic to the forest (such as the great blue turaco – an outlandish blue, red and green bird which streams from tree to tree like a procession of streamlined psychedelic turkeys.
The park is also known for its unique forest canopy walks form above the ground where the entire forest and its habuitats can be enjoyed from an aerial view, some motor cycling adventure is also seen around this forest via its well tarmacked road cutting through the forest. In the towns of Butare and Cyangugu, community nature walks can be enjoyed; surelyalot can be done once at the Nyungwe forest national park site. For tracking chimpanzees, a tracking permit must be acquired from the Rwanda Development Board.
