Detailed itinerary of the 1 Day Gorilla Trek Rwanda:

Wake up very early precisely at 4:30 am and have breakfast before being picked by our company representative. Drive for 2 hours north-westwards to Volcanoes National Park while enjoying the magnificent views of the lush rolling hills and also see locals going by their daily activities such as tending to their gardens or grazing cattle.

Arrive Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00 am for a cup of purely Rwandan coffee or tea, then join other trekkers for briefing and be allocated to the gorilla group to be tracked.

Connect to the trailhead of allocated group and embark on the trek which usually starts with enthusiasm and energy but the most interesting thing about this activity is that you won’t see only the mountain gorillas but also get a chance to see other residents of the jungle such as unique bird species, primates, butterfly species and other mammals as you hike the slopes of the Volcanoes that are undeniably challenging.

After 30 minutes to 4 hours of trekking, you will be alerted by the ranger/guide of Mountain gorillas’ presence. Spend 60 minutes being informed about their interesting behavior and taking photos of them socializing, resting, playing, foraging or mothers bonding with infants.

After the one hour, connect to the starting point where you will find the driver waiting for you to proceed for lunch at Muhabura Hotel, then transfer to Kigali for your return flight (if it’s from 21:00hours onwards).

What you need for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

A rain jacket or poncho at all times because Volcanoes altitude and terrain make it one of the few places that receive rain anytime.
Waterproof hiking boots to allow you to hike through the rough terrains and slippery trails of Volcanoes National Park.

Long trousers and long-sleeved shirt to protect the legs and hands from being scratched by the parts of trees or grass.
Gardening gloves to protect your hands as you grab leaves and tree branches that may be thorny while trekking.

Non-flash camera to capture all the precious moments of the safari including your encounter with the mountain gorillas
Enough drinking water and energy-giving snacks to quench your thirst and help to rejuvenate during the trek

Dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking

• Maintain a distance of 7 meters when seeing the mountain gorillas.
• Flash cameras are not allowed because they scare the mountain gorillas.
• Only 8 persons are allowed to trek a habituated gorilla family per day.
• Don’t spend more than one hour with the allocated gorilla group.
• Don’t eat, drink or smoke in the presence of mountain gorillas.
• Avoid abrupt and swift movement while viewing the mountain gorillas because it can scare them and ruin photogenic moments.
• Too much noise when hiking or while in the presence of mountain gorillas is not allowed because it scares away the giant apes.
• Do not trek the mountain gorillas if you are ill with cough or flue.
• Do not litter the Park with leftovers and rubbish because they act as breeding places for germs.
